Feel Good Fridays: Human Connection

By Tay Chang

Hello, there. So glad you came into Therapy Thursdays. Grab a nice warm cup of tea, or coffee if you like danger, and be in a comfortable space because today in Therapy Thursdays we will be discussing topics about how to manage your mental mindset during this time of distress. In this modern time, we are drowning in panic, whether it’s about our health or our families’ health. It’s unpredictable how long the quarantine will last, however I do know for sure that if we keep helping each other from preventing the spread and connect with one another with the sweetness of love and care, we can get through this.

Today’s topic is how to spend your day connecting with others.

According to Liz Swan from Psychology Today, staying in touch with loved ones can help us stay connected with others. “I've been busy contacting good friends all over the country to see how they're coping and feeling and what they're doing to stay calm. This crisis is hitting everyone hard, but some people will have more lightness about it than you, and that can lift you up.”

Human interaction is very significant in our everyday lives, which is why it can be overwhelming when we are isolated in our homes. Reaching out to connect with friends and family is one way that can relax the tense heart.

Keeping emotions inside, instead of letting them out can lead to a negative impact which may lead to anxiety and major stress. Therefore, talking it out with others can reduce the risk of isolating emotions. Katherine Diggory, a journalist for Explore Life, noted, “For one thing, it is important for our mental health. Social contact helps us to cope with stress and major life changes like a divorce, redundancy and moving house. And knowing that we are valued by others is an important psychological factor in helping us to forget the negative aspects of our lives, and thinking more positively about our environment.”

Staying in contact with family and friends is the best thing you can do for others and yourself. It shows how much unlimited care you have for others’ wellbeing.

Ways to Stay Connected:
  • Phone Calls
  • Scheduled Party Video Chats
  • Email
  • Writing little notes/letters
  • Texting
  • Spend time with your family
